C-SPAN StudentCam Documentary Competition:
The StudentCam documentary competition under the network company C-SPAN allows students to create a documentary that addresses prevalent topics in the nation. Every year, a grand total of $100,000 is awarded across the top 150 documentaries. This year’s theme is yet to be revealed, but a judge on the panel revealed that the theme will relate to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing, addressing the themes of life, liberty, and happiness. The official theme will be revealed in late June, so the summer is the perfect time to begin planning your documentary. For more information, students can visit StudentCam.org
Digital Privacy Scholarship:
This scholarship is available to all high school students and highlights the importances of safely managing your digital profile. This scholarship awards $1000 to the top response, and all that is required is a 140 character statement responding to the prompt “I’m taking responsibility for my digital profile by…” The deadline to apply is June 30 and students can visit digitalresponsibility.org to complete the application.
Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship:
This scholarship is available to all female high school students and works to empower the next generation of female leaders in the tech industry. The scholarship awards $500 to recipients and the application consists of a 250 to 400 word essay that discusses a piece of technology that inspires you. Drew Steig Memorial Scholarship:
This scholarship is available to FCPS juniors and sophomores who have struggled with mental health. The Scholarship is in memory of a McLean High School graduate, Drew Stieg, who struggled with mental health and passed from an overdose. In his memory, the scholarship program rewards a $3000 prize to the winning recipient that fills out their google form. The application is due June 6, and students can visit sites.google.com/view/drewstieg/home?authuser=0 to learn Stieg’s story and complete the application.
Spirit Pro Camps:
Spirit Pros Camps, located in Fairfax, currently has positions open for day counselors. Across a nine-week program lasting from June 20 to August 18, you’ll be expected to be a role model and guide kids through the day’s activities, maintaining an active energy to keep it fun. Be warned, you’re also responsible for their safety: training is provided. Similar expectations are held for other counselor positions. If you’re not familiar with Spirit Pro, maybe contact your old summer camps.
Ozzie’s Good Eats:
Just across from the Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, Ozzie’s Good Eats has plenty of openings for students, over the summer or not. While minors cannot apply to be a server, the restaurant has offers for hosting, food running, and dishwashing jobs. All have the possibility of upward mobility, and most start at a comfortable $18 an hour. Food service isn’t particularly glamorous work – but Ozzie’s offers a flexible schedule and employee discount that may make it worth the effort this summer.
Job-Hunting Advice:
Local haunts like Peet’s keep their applications open most of the time, so keep your eyes peeled! For those of working age but without a license, focus on your local shopping centers to keep things convenient. You could also find freelance work just within your neighborhood, but you’ll have to be proactive: everyone needs their lawn mowed occasionally.
