LB girls’ basketball picks up first win of 2016
The girls’ basketball team came out of the winter break with a win over conference foe Mount Vernon. After being without games for almost a week, the game started out very slow. At halftime, the Bruins lead 13-9. With just over 5 seconds remaining, junior Kate Esper hit a two pointer to put LB up 36-35 and ultimately give the Bruins the win.
“Well we’ve never seen Mount Vernon because this is the first time they are in our conference,” head coach John Gianelli said. “So we knew that we would go in with a game plan, but we would have to make adjustments. They were really playing up tight on us, so in one of the timeouts, we decided to take them to the basket and when help comes, kick the ball out. Everyone did a good job attacking the basket, we just couldn’t make a shot.”
On Tuesday night, LB shot just 23% from the field. Esper’s final shot capped off a 15 point fourth quarter for the Bruins.
“[Scoring the final shot] was an amazing feeling, definitely one I’ll never forget,” Esper said. “I saw everyone on the bench and in the stands start cheering and it was amazing to see all of the support. I knew that we had limited time on the clock, and I didn’t think there would be another opportunity, so I took the shot. Bailey was driving to the basket and three girls were playing defense in the pant. She kicked it out to me on the baseline and I was able to get an open shot.”
For the second time this season, all three levels of the girls’ program beat their opponents on the same evening. The freshman and JV teams both won by more than 20 points, with the varsity team winning by just one.
“It was awesome that the girls program had a clean sweep,” Esper said. “It’s a huge confidence booster for our upcoming games and I love it when everyone succeeds in the game.”
The next game for the Bruins will be Friday vs. West Potomac. The game is at home, with tip-off coming at 7:15.
