Demarco sets cast for LBMT’s winter production of ‘Hairspray’
After days of agonizing waiting, musical theatre director Mary DeMarco released the final cast list for Lake Braddock Musical Theatre’s production of Hairspray. Hairspray tells the story of an overweight teenager, Tracy, who attempts to dance on The Corny Collins show; however, she faces opposition from a mean girl at school, Amber, and Amber’s mother. Also, the budding romance between Tracy and another one of her classmates, Link, serves as a subplot. Tracy is to be played by junior Kirsten Chase, and Link will be played by junior Tyler King. Tracy’s classmate, Amber, will be portrayed by sophomore Michaela Nichols, and her stage mother will be played by senior Sarah Kreienbrink.
“I am so honored and grateful to be playing such a great role and can’t wait to start working on the show,” Chase said. “There were so many awesome people up for this role and I am beyond thankful to get to work with such an amazing cast.”
Nichols shared her excitement.
“I’m so beyond excited to be playing Amber this year in the show but also pretty nervous as this is my first major role in a show at Lake Braddock,” Nichols said. “But I can’t wait to begin and learn everything I can from the extremely talented people I’ll be working with.”
Like most theatrical productions, the casting process involves a series of auditions followed by callbacks. Callbacks consisted of performing scenes with other actors and actresses to search for theatrical chemistry.
“[Callbacks] were pretty crazy,” Chase said. “Everyone there was so talented and auditions are always nerve-racking. That being said, everyone is always so supportive of each other and there’s great energy.”
King was as enthusiastic about the casting and the future of the show as his classmates.
“I’m thrilled with the amount of people we have this year that didn’t audition for last year’s musical,” King said. “Hairspray is a musical for all kinds of people and I’m glad that our cast reflects that.”
LBMT will be performing Hairspray from January 22nd through January 25th.
