Bruins down Titans in OT after giving up lead late

Fresh off a 2-1 overtime victory against Lee High School, Lake Braddock Varsity Field Hockey took on the TC Williams Titans at home this past Friday on a cool, windy night.

The Bruins opened up scoring roughly eight minutes into the game on a penalty stroke by junior Annina Zelkin, setting up a 1-0 lead with 22:14 remaining in the first half.

“Annina Zelkin [played the best],” sophomore Haley Hopkins said. “She was a major part in our defense and she scored the penalty stroke which helped us win the game.”

Similar to the first half, the Bruins struck first in the second half as well. Senior Katrina Tragakis scored the goal, giving LB a 2-0 lead over the Titans with 19:33 left in the game. Later on, with about five minutes left to play in the game, junior Caroline Carver of the Titans scored, decreasing the Bruins lead to one. Less than two minutes later, the Titans scored again, this time with a goal by Avery Olson, tying the game up at two apiece.

“I was really upset [when they scored],” sophomore Ariana Zimmerman said, “but I knew we would get it back in the end.”

All tied up at two at the end of regulation, the Bruins entered overtime for the third straight game. This would not last long. Only five minutes into overtime, senior Deysi Camacho scored the game-winning goal for the Bruins, making her team victorious over the Titans with a score of 3-2. Now, the team’s record is 4-5 and has a win streak of three games. The Bruins will visit the Annandale Atoms next Tuesday at 7:30 in an attempt to improve their record to 5-5.

“As a team we played really well,” sophomore Anna-Marie Thibodeaux said. “We have really good team chemistry and worked very well together.”
