The Low-Down On Lunches

The Low-Down On Lunches

Overall, the food is sanitary and healthy. The Food Service workers work really hard to create a delicious menu for the kids at LBSS, and they deserve a big thank you.

Who Decided What the Lunch Lines Should Be?

The ideas to have different choices for line came from Pam Laing, the Food Service Manager. “I thought it would be a good idea to have more choices,” Laing said. “Kids don’t like to eat the same food every day for lunch.” Other FCPS middle schools don’t get as many choices as LBSS does, and they only get the regular lunch lines.

There are Seven Lunch Lines at Lake Braddock:

  • Burger (x2)
  • Mexican
  • Asian
  • Italian
  • Deli
  • Sandwich

Top Five Favorite Foods

  1. Hamburger
  2. Deli Items
  3. Meatball Sub
  4. Nachos (with round chips)
  5. Ice Cream

Not ‘cho right shape!

The nachos have become less popular since changing from round chips to rectangle, but Laing has managed to convince the county to get them back. “They’re more expensive, but they bring in more of a profit,” she said.

The more profit the Food Service makes, the more Food Service workers they can hire. Right now, they sometimes don’t have enough workers to run lines, so they often have to leave them closed.

From Farm to Mouth

To make a hamburger, the lettuce and tomatoes are delivered from Bowie Produce.

Next, the patties are cooked in the oven. Finally, the burgers are put into baskets with fries, and assembled based on the student’s preference.

The deli items are made in the same way as the burgers. The cooking process is mostly the same for all of the most popular food items. For the meatball sub, the meatballs are cooked then frozen -the food is shipped frozen- then cooked in the steamers.

The produce gets delivered every week from Bowie Produce.
