Coming to theater: ‘Game of Tiaras’

New Play ‘Ha-ha’s and ‘Boo-hoo’s

This year’s production of the Booster Organization’s “Storybook Theater” is a tragic/comic fantasy-parody called Game of Tiaras.

The show is directed by high school senior Ally Savage. It showcases a blend of both high school and middle school performers and crew members.

Savage is working with the cast to get everything ready.

“We still need to work on the lighting, costumes, tech and blocking,” she said.

Her biggest concern is getting everything done on time.

The play held auditions this past December, so a lot is still needed to prepare for the actual performance.

There is a cast of about 19 to 20 people and it is evenly split between middle and high school.

“I was very happy and surprised when I saw my name on the call back list,” said Dylan Wolf, a seventh grader who is playing a guard in the play.

So far, the actors have had a lot of good things to say about the play.

The play is a parody of Shakespeare’s King Lear with an old, crazy king who decides to split his kingdom in three for his three daughters. There’s Cinderella, the totally-not-copyrighted-Disney-character Ellie and his youngest daughter Belle.

The king decides whoever is nicest to him will get the best part of the kingdom. One of the daughters offends him, so he banishes her. The two remaining sisters then begin to fight over the kingdom.

The actors think it has many ups and downs. “I really like it,” said seventh grade actress Jahnavi Dave. “It’s hilarious.”

Even with most rehearsals going smoothly, there are still some challenges.

“My biggest concern is knowing how to work the lights,” said training tech crew member Erin Bennett.

One of the first problems was that the stage is a shared space and other classes us it for their rehearsals.

Sometimes the actors themselves had multiple conflicts with the practice schedule too.

However with the support of volunteer parents who come in to assist with rehearsals, students are finding the process running smoothly.

Pearson has been staying after school as well in case a volunteer can’t make it or is running late.

The high school Booster Organization sponsors a production every year to raise funds for the Lake Braddock’s Drama department.
