LBVFH beats West Potomac in another overtime thriller

After seeing its 3-game win streak snap in a 2-1 loss to the Annandale Atoms this past Tuesday, LB’s field hockey team took on the West Potomac Wolverines on Friday night.
After a slow start by both teams, the Bruins scored first, nearly 20 minutes into the game. The goal was scored by senior Katrina Tragakis, setting up a 1-0 LB lead over West Potomac with 9:54 remaining in the first half.
The Bruins would carry the lead into the second half and hold off the Wolverines for 10 minutes, until West Potomac scored a goal, tying the game at 1-1 with 19:02 left in regulation.
“When they tied the game I felt frustrated, but we had 20 minutes left in the game and momentum was carrying our way so I never felt worried,” sophomore Bailey Edwards said, “If there’s one thing I can count on my team for, it’s to step up when we have to.”
Both teams showed a strong defense for the rest of regulation and by the end of the fourth quarter, the Bruins entered a 15-minute overtime period.
“I was frustrated [entering overtime],” Tragakis said, “but it makes you want to play harder to win.”
Entering OT, the Bruins were focused on getting the win, playing tough defense and pushing the ball into Wolverine territory. At the end of OT, the score was still 1-1, so the teams entered strokes.
“Entering strokes is always nerve-wracking, but we stayed focused as a team,” Tragakis said.
The Bruins scored on two of their five strokes, the first by Tragakis and the second by junior Annina Zelkin. Junior goalkeeper Katie Thompson blocked all five of her shots, resulting in a win for the Bruins.
“Entering strokes is always a little scary, but we practice them as a team every day in practice,” Edwards said, “Our goalie Katie Thompson has been working very hard at blocking strokes, and she had a great shutout tonight.”
With the win, LB improves to 5-6 on the year, and they will face South County on Monday, Sept. 29 as they try to reach the .500 mark.
