LB students participate in annual science fair

February 23, 2016

Science fair is one of the longest and most difficult projects during the school year. Every honors science student is required to choose between doing an experiment or writing a 10-page report on a world problem. Honors biology, chemistry and physics all require it. Science fair involves picking a unique experiment and following the steps of the scientific method to prove a hypothesis.

“A certain number of slides are required on certain dates,” freshman Simon Totten said.

Science fair projects vary widely, from testing household salt on ice to changing the density of muffins, the project of freshman Maria Euripides.

“My partner writes up the data, but I do the graphs and statistics,” Euripides said.

The Toshiba project includes writing a 10-page essay on a global issue.

“I worked on the possibility of wireless energy,” freshman Thomas Do said. “We have to submit the paper to the Toshiba website.”

The most crucial choice of an honors science student is whether to to do science fair or the Toshiba project.

“Science fair is more of a fun, social project than the Toshiba essay,” Euripides said.

Reasons vary for picking science fair over the essay.

“I chose science air because it promoted individuality and is a more scientific process,” Totten said.

Stress is a common factor that makes students choose the less public option in the Toshiba project.

“I never regretted not doing science fair because it gave me stage fright,” Do said.

Euripides began her project at the beginning of December in order to have enough time to prepare for the final presentation of the science fair board.

“I’m not stressed because everyone is just worried about their own work,” Totten said.
